Frosted bowls are the workhorses of a sound bath: thick quartz walls, a full voice that carries through a room, and a matte surface that grips the striker so a clear tone comes easily. They're where most of us start, and the bowls we keep returning to.

Choosing a tuning

Bowls are relational: played together, their tones meet and make new harmonics. Choose one tuning for a set so the bowls agree with each other.

Pitch is an art and a science

Crystal bowls are made by hand, and each one can sit a few cents above or below its exact pitch. That's part of its character, and it can be adjusted. The simplest way is water tuning: a little water in the bowl lowers its pitch, so a bowl that sits sharp can be brought into step with the rest of a set, by ear or with a tuner.
